Blair Dinsdale Finishes with Minot State Beavers

The plainsmen would also like to recognize another ex-Crocus Player as Blair Dinsdale (brother of linebacker coach Rob Dinsdale) career with the Minot State Beavers is coming to a close with there final game being played Sat. No.19th in Texas @ the University of San Antonio. Blair's has played for the Beavers for the last 4 years and currently is 3rd in tackles on the team. Congrats to Blair for making your school proud.

Landon Rice Finishes with Manitoba Bisons

The plainsmen would like to recognize ex-Crocus player Landon Rice as his University playing career came to an end on Oct.29th as the University of Manitoba Bison's lost out to University of Regina. Regina captured the fourth and final playoff spot in a 31-22 win over the Bison's. Landon was playing in his fourth year with the herd. Congrats to Landon for making your school proud.

Maloney Crushes Record

Crocus Plains Football would like to congratulate one of their own in Taylor Maloney for breaking the Winnipeg High School Football League record for receiving yards in a season.Taylor's record came in the first quarter of the last game of the season for the Plainsmen which was against the Maples Marauders. Taylor had 40 catches on the year (2 shy of the record for most receptions) for a whopping 758 yards, an average of 19 yards per catch and 5 td's. Eclipsing the old record held by Trevor Smart of the St. John's Tigers having 695 receiving yards which was set in the 1997 season. We will be looking for big things again from this student athlete next season as he is only in his Grade 11 year. Congratulates Taylor on your milestone accomplishment.

Marauders Close Out Plainsmen

On Weds. Oct.19th the Plainsmen were on the road for there last game of the season playing in the Winnipeg Stadium against the Maples Marauders. The Plainsmen battled down to the last whistle only to drop a close one 14-7 with Maples last score coming under the last 2 minutes of the game. It was a difficult game for the boys to play as they re already eliminated from playoffs but in true Plainsmen style they gritted it out to the very end. Playing rather hurt, players gave it there all and that as a coach is all you can ask.

Ryan Baker had another strong day for the Crocus Squad completing 14-29 for 272 yards and a td. Top receiver on the day, no surprise Taylor Maloney with 5 pass receptions for 143 yards. Though all receivers making high lite reel catches at times. Travis Roy playing both ways rushed for 68 yards on 9 carries. and defensively having 13 tackles. Spencer Harries having his best game of the season having 10 tackle and a interception.

Congratulation going out to Ryan Baker having a jaw dropping 1411 yards through the air this season. We are all looking forward to seeing what the Baker/Maloney duo may be capable of next season. Though this has been a tough year I think we can all look back and be proud in seeing the way the players evolved as young men.

P.F.L.

Vikings Edge Plainsmen

The last home game of the season was played at Crocus field Friday Oct.14th with the cross town rival Vincent Massey Vikings edging out the Plainsmen by a score of 30 -14. The game was closer than the score indicated as the Vikings got 2 late td's to seal the win.

Once again Special teams played a huge role in our boys loss as we had 3 blocked punts to aid the Vikes, 2 of which had our defense pinned inside our 2 yard line. Defensively we stood tall for most of the game as Massey turned the ball over on downs numerous times.

Stats for the game are as follows:
Ryan Baker had another strong day again going 13-29 for 253 yds and 2 td's. Taylor Maloney with 4 catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Kimon Small having his best game as a Plainsmen in his short career with us raking in 107 yards through the air and a touchdown. Also notable was Johnny Bokkel with many highlight reel catches. On the defense side of the ball Travis Roy left it all on the field and had 15 tackle and a fumble recovery as well as Kevin Aird having 10 tackles.

Extra points: with his arm Ryan Baker has gone over the thousand yard mark this season and is in a race for the league lead in yards thrown. Taylor Maloney is just 82 yards shy of the Winnipeg High School League record for yards in a season. Having 613 and the league record being 695.

The Plainsmen round out there season on the road playing the (2-4) Maple's Marauders at Winnipeg Stadium Weds.Oct.19th. Game time 3 o'clock.

Crusader's nip Crocus

On Oct.7 our Plainsmen played host to the St. Paul's Crusader's and lost by a score of 16-11. The inside story was the Plainsmen had to battle the elements as well as a stingy St.Pauls defense. Wind gusts reached 60 k at times and with rain coming down, one might assume that the pass oriented Plainsmen offense would struggle. In true warrior fashion they battled down to the wire before this one slipped away from them.

There sometimes isn't alot of positives to take away from a 1-4 team but in this case our boys played with heart and determination, and never considered themselves out of the game until the final whistle sounded. This being evident when Quarterback Ryan Baker was in a great deal of pain and fought through it in order to stay in the game. Baker was 11-22 on the day for 146 yards and a TD. Taylor Maloney led all receivers with 5 catches for 86 yards, kicked a convert and had 2 singles. Johnny Bokkel had the lone score for the home side hauling in a 11 yard strike from Baker that was on a rope through the gusting wind.

Travis Roy led the Plainsmen Defense in tackles with 10 followed closely by Spencer Harries with 9. Roy also led the ball in the rushing category with 51 yards on 8 carries.
Things don't get any easier for the Plainsmen as they host the Vincent Massey Vikings (3-2) in there last home game of the 2011 season.

Game time is 4 o'clock at Plainsmen field.
*Please note gameday has been changed to Friday the 14th.

Plainsmen JV Win Big Over Vikings In Home Opener

After starting the JV season on the road with 2 close losses to 2 of the top teams in the league, the JV Plainsmen were anxious to show what they are capable of in their Home Opener vs. the crosstown rival Vincent Massey Vikings on Wednesday, and truly did not dissapoint their fans and coaches by crushing the Vikings 52-6. The Plainsmen dominated both sides of the ball from start to finish.

Leading the offensive charge was Victor St. Pierre, rushing behind stellar blocking for over 260 yds, while recieving for another 40, en route to scoring 6 touchdowns. Martin Walker chipped in with a 56 yard reception for a touchdown to start the scoring. Freshman Quarterback Jace Mills looked poised and ran the offence like a true leader, behind a huge, aggressive front 5 protecting him and destroying kids on blocks in the secondary. A job well done.

Defensively, the Plainsmen literally beat the Vikings almost every play of the game! The aggressiveness the defense displayed in tackling and blitzing was truly something to see. Led by Steven Siebrecht with 16 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble recovery, and numerous special teams tackles and blocks, as well as 49 yards in punt return yards, Steven was BY FAR the most dominant player on the field every time he was on it! His leadership skills really showed as he guided the young defense through the game, were second to none. Great job Steven!! Newcomer from Neelin Connor Mills dominated the D-line and added to the Vikings woes by being totally unstoppable at defensive end. Connor had 5 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 forced fumbles from his hard work. Jordan Knott chipped in with 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception. Lucas Neil-Woods put the final nail in the Vikings coffin with a pick on the CP 10 yard line to snuff out a potential scoring opportunity late in the game.

Special Teams were BY FAR the biggest difference in the game. Every time we recived a punt, the up front and second line of the return team would destroy most of the Vikings. Led by Brayden Moroz and Adam Dyck with HUGE open field hits really opened up the field for our returners. They're no fear and agressive nature was evident on every block they had. Both players had well over 15 blocks each, with numerous returns they had 2 or 3 blocks each. These crushing hits proved to be the difference as the Vikings could not match the size or agressiveness of the Plainsmen Special Teams players. AWSOME WORK BOYS!!

The Plainsmen realized what a FULL TEAM EFFORT can achieve, and are excited and committed to continue these efforts to keep winning!!

The Plainsmen look to avenge their loss last year vs. the Sturgeon Heights Huskies at CP at 3 oclock Wednesday.

Plainsmen Gold Card Campaign

Crocus Plains Football Program would like to thank all that supported our team by purchasing Gold Cards again this year. With your help this allows our program to continue to provide for our young athletes the necessary equipment in helping prevent injuries.

Trojans Trounce Plainsmen

On Sept.30th our Plainsmen left the city to play the Portage Trojans at Portage field. It didn't take long to see the boys left their A game on the bus, as Portage led 20-0 after the first quarter. Facing a gusty wind with our rushing game not working, our offense had to pick things up. Unfortunately for the Plainsmen that wasn't the only unit not working that half. Our Special teams punt team allowed a blocked punt with Portage taking over at our 2 yard line.

The offense seemed to get rolling towards the end of the first half with 2 cracks from the 1 but the clock expired before we reached the goal line. Ryan Baker's stat's on the day were 9-16 for 148 yards with 1 td and 2 interceptions also running in for a 2 pt convert. Baker also being the high rusher with 25 yards on the ground. Top receiver on the day was Johnny Bokkel playing probably his best game as a Plainsmen catching 4 ball for 58 yards. Taylor Maloney netted the Plainsmen's only score on the day hauling in a 23 yard td pass.

There were a few bright spots on the day as defensively we played o.k. after being pinned deep because of punt team miscues. Defensively Kevin Aird led in tackles having 10 followed closely by Travis Roy with 9. Worth noting was Cody Robinson having 3 tackles and a forced fumble before re-aggravating an ankle injury.

Extra Points: the Plainsmen were playing without 5 starters who are nursing injuries.

Crocus next game at home this Friday Oct 7 against the 1-3 St. Paul Crusaders.

Plainsmen Rally to Beat the Spartans

Our Plainsmen had something to prove not only to themselves. but to the rest of the WHSFL on Friday night at Neelin High School. Coming in winless the Plainsmen used a balanced rushing/passing attack to get into the win column. After a somewhat slow start and many unnecessary penalties, our boys found themselves in a hole down 13-0. Que the come back. A determined Plainsmen group had enough. Leading the way for Crocus on the ground was converted line backer Travis Roy who scored his first touchdown. Kevin Aird played well at linebacker and full back Trent Nelson's play was also noteable. Ryan Baker put together another solid day passing as he went 7/15 for 121 yards most of which went to Taylor Maloney having 5 catches for 70 yards and 2 tds. It was a total team effort from our defense who played very well to Special teams and Offense for controlling the clock. The Plainsmen take things on the road as they play the Portage Trojans Thursday Sept. 29th at 4pm in Portage.

Next home date is Oct. 7th vs. St. Pauls Crusaders.

Plainsmen Embarassed in Home Opener

On a day that was supposed to get their season on track, the Plainsmen had more questions than answers. After a somewhat slow start, we found ourselves down 8-0 before Taylor Maloney answered with a 107 yard kick off return Special Teams miracle. After that high point, it was all Grant Park. They scored on consecutive plays and our boys found themselves down 43-7 at half. We could have rolled over and played dead, but in a real gutsy effort, the team answered the challenge in the second half, and played the way we coaches knew they could play. As a result, the Plainsmen won the second half 7-6. It showed what this team can do if they play a full game of football. Ryan Baker scored late in the game on a one yard plunge, making the final 49-14 for the Pirates.

Other notes: Baker had another strong outing in the air completing 16-28 for 204 yards for the Plainsmen, many of which to his favorite target Maloney who also racked up 12 catches for 169 yards.
It will be interesting to see which team shows up next week for the Plainsmen.

Next game September 23rd against cross town rival Neelin Spartans (1-1) at Neelin,
Game time 5 p.m.

Plainsmen Drop Season Opener

The Plainsmen opened the 2011 season on the road in Winnipeg playing the Garden City Fighting Gophers Friday afternoon. In a game that was last year's home opener for Crocus, the outcome was unfortunately much the same for the Plainsmen. Though coming in quite confident, our Plainsmen had some mental lapses which aided in scoring for the Gophers. The only scoring on the day for Crocus came off the foot of Taylor Maloney, with a 35 yard field goal. Make the final Garden City 28 Crocus Plains 3.

Be sure to come out to support your Crocus Plains Plainsmen this Friday @ 3
as they play host to the Grant Park Pirates at Crocus Field.

Welcome to another sponsor!

The Plainsmen would like to welcome Scale Solutions Inc. to our growing list of community minded sponsors! Please visit our Sponsors section for more information and links to their websites.

A Little Help?

Exhibition Report, Plainsmen Ready for the Season!

The plainsmen finally got some answer's to how there season is going to progress on last Wednesday at Plainsmen Field. The temperature wasn't the only thing hot on the day as the Plainsmen Varsity team played exhibition matches against both the Sisler Spartans and the Kelvin Clippers. Though the scoreboard didn't favor Crocus there were many positives that we can take out of both outings. Both Div.1 teams, Sisler and Kelvin both knew they were in tough as our boys really came to play.

The Plainsmen managed to move the ball when had to against to strong defenses. Our defense managed to hold the two Div 1 teams to a combined 33 points for both games. Lastly, our special teams will definitely turns some heads this season with decent coverage and an ability to kick the ball.

Unfortunately though, the Woz Cup will return inside the perimeter for another season. With that in mind our Plainsmen learned that the can play with the big boys and not look out of place.

The next Plainsmen action is in Winnipeg to play Garden City Friday Sept. 9th.
The home opener will be played September16th against the Grant Park Pirates. Game time 3 p.m.

In Memorium

To honor our friend/classmate Paul Tschuschba who passed away earlier this year in an automobile accident, the Plainsmen team will wear an PT sticker on their helmets this season. Paul's younger brother Albert plays for our JV program.

New Jerseys

Our Plainsmen will be sporting a new look for the 2011 season. With help from our sponsors the Varsity Squad will be sporting new Maroon Jersey's with maroon Pants. If you are intrested in getting your business logo screen printed on a jersey please see a member of the Plainsmen Coaching staff or contact our website administrator for more information.

Coach Dinsdale's Pre-season Perspective

The first week of practice for the 2011 season is in the books, and our Plainsmen are starting to gel. Both Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams have been out and kids are making a real difference. This year we are blessed with lots of size and some real play-makers, making this season one of the most interesting to watch in the last few years. Anchoring our offensive line four year player, and Canada Cup allstar Sean Simpson will hope to blow a few holes open and guide some of our younger players after being asked to play a leadership role. Ryan Baker takes over the helm at Q.B. after backing up Kyle Malyon last season. There should be no reason for the Plainsmen not to move the ball with lots of experience at our skilled positions this season.

On the defensive side of the ball Travis Roy will will look to lead a veteran line backer core. One Plainsmen that looks ready to play is Kevin Aird. It proves that hard work pays off in this case as he is ready to make the most of his Grade 12 year.

Our coaching staff believes with a lot of hard work and great effort we can accomplish our goals.
Wednesday's game against tier 1 team Kelvin Clippers will measure how far the Plainsmen have come in a short time.

Plainsmen to host Kelvin Clippers On Weds. August 31st

The Plainsmen will look to take back the Wozney cup. The Kelvin Clippers are a Division 1 school in the WHSFL and are making there way out to Brandon to take part in an exhibition game versus the Plainsmen. Curtis Wozney was a former player for Crocus Plains and assistant coach with Kelvin. Tragically, Curtis was taken from us in 2009 in an automobile accident. Although Curtis is not here to share his passion with all of us Plainsmen, coach Jamie Freiheit thought it would be nice to honor our friend and mentor of both schools. Game time 4:30 at Crocus field.

Maluga Family Donates to the Plainsmen

On July 9th a social evening was held to honor Glenn and Pam Maluga . Glenn generously donated a Teemu Selanne Winnipeg Jets Jersey in hopes that the money raised could go back to our organization; split evenly with the rugby program Grant’s other sport. After the auction was complete a sum of $465.00 dollars was raised and the Plainsmen family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.

Also in Maluga family news!

Grant Maluga has let it be known that he has accepted the latest offer from the Winnipeg Rifles football club. It was kind of a tug of war for Grant as he was also excepting offers from the Masabi Range football team as well. Masabi is a Jr. College in Minnesota. I guess the Rifles offer turned out to be too good to be true and Grant is moving to Winnipeg. Congrats Grant for a great 4 years and we wish you nothing but the best!

Coach Dinsdale is a former Plainsmen graduate who played with Mount Allison Mounties in the AUS (Atlantic University Sport Conference) before later transferring to the University of Calgary. We look forward to Robert's experience as he will be assisting Coach Freiheit with his defense.

Promising Start for Plainsmen in 2011

With the 2011 Spring camp coming to a close it certainly looks as if the Plainsmen have what it takes to be competitive this fall. Our J.V. team played a Jamboree at Winnipeg Stadium and won their three games by a combined scores of 133-7. They were really looking for things to improve after their 2010 campaign and appear to be on the right track. Our Varsity squad took on the Yorkton Raiders and continued the winning ways with a 34-22 victory in Yorkton. It has been a few years since both teams have gone undefeated in spring ball and both teams are quite anxious to strap them up this summer.
